TRANSPORTATION OF GOODS. SPECIAL CARGOES
Special cargoes are cargoes which require special conditions when organising the transportation. Depending on features of each cargo, there are four types, or four groups of special cargoes.
Dangerous goods – these are goods which can potentially harm people’s health or environment, in case rules of transportation and loading-unloading are not followed. Gases under pressure, explosive substances, radioactive materials and other hazardous goods demand individual approach during the transportation. Of course organisation of transportation of dangerous goods is closely connected with the need to monitor the integrity of packaging as well as compliance with all the necessary safety measures.
Oversized and heavyweight goods also fall under the type of special cargoes. During transportation of such goods it is necessary to carefully choose transportation means – this especially concerns automobile transport. More than this, it is often necessary to compile an individual route of the transportation, since not all roads can support transportation of heavyweight goods. Of course, dimensions have to be taken into account as well when planning a route, since it may happen that oversized cargo cannot fit under electric lines, bridges, etc. Mistakes in logistics can be expensive in such cases.
Perishable goods and other cargoes – these are vegetables, fruits, fresh flowers and so on. These goods also fall under special cargoes, which demand special conditions of transportation. Humidity and correct temperature modes have to be enabled - first of all this depends on technical possibilities of a transport. Perishable goods can even be newspapers and other periodicals, which do not require any special temperature conditions during transportation, but need to be delivered quickly, otherwise they lose their relevance. When planning transportation of such goods, it is important to take into account numerous factors, including condition of roads.
Live cargo – these are animals, when transporting them one has to follow certain rules, for example, temperature mode, speed of delivery, conditions of keeping the animals within the vehicle, etc. As a rule, special animal cargoes have to be accompanied by expeditors, who can feed the animals in a timely manner and keep track of the animals’ condition.
